Transpacific Cleanaway's Battery Recycling Program

In response to increasing community and government concern, Transpacific Cleanaway is providing a battery recycling service for dry cell batteries.

Batteries contain a range of environmentally hazardous chemicals including Cadmium, Mercury, Zinc and Nickel, all of which are toxic in high concentration. In particular, Cadmium is a major pollutant in soil where it is absorbed by plants and enters the food chain.

By recycling batteries, you'll help reduce the release of toxic chemicals associated with their disposal.

What type of batteries can be recycled?

The dry cell batteries can be classified into two major categories:

Primary batteries:

These are non-rechargeable and are commonly alkaline batteries with Zinc and Manganese chemistry.

Batteries

Secondary batteries:

These are rechargeable and are usually Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride or Lithium Ion, which may be identified by one of the following symbols:

NiCd or NC for
Nickel Cadmium
NiMH or NH for
Nickel Metal Hydride
Li Ion for
Lithium Ion.
Battery Ni Cd battery symbold NiMH Li Ion

Secondary batteries are commonly found in:

  • Cordless Phones
  • Cordless drills
  • Mobile phones
  • Laptops and PCs
  • Shavers
  • Video Cameras

Examples of rechargeable batteries

rechargeable batteries - Cordless Drills rechargeable batteries - Single Cell rechargeable batteries - Plastic Packs rechargeable batteries - Chargers

What happens to the batteries?

Once your box arrives at Transpacific Cleanaway, the batteries are sorted by type and shipped to licensed recycling facilities where the metals are recovered.
