Fluorescent tube recycling
>
Transpacific can recycle a range of fluorescent tubes.
Many fluorescent tubes contain mercury, a toxic material which is environmentally hazardous if disposed of incorrectly. Disposing of large amounts of mercury containing lamps in landfill is forbidden in some states.
What can be recycled?
Transpacific’s Fluorescent Tube Recycling Program targets mercury containing lamps including:
- High intensity discharge (HID) lamps used for street lighting
- Linear fluorescent tubes used in commercial and public buildings
- Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) used in homes
- Neon tubes used in signs.
The mercury, as well as the glass, phosphor and aluminium contained in the lamps can be safely recovered and reused.

What happens to the fluorescent tubes?

Recovered mercury is commonly reused in the dental industry in amalgam for fillings.
